Christian's Cerebrations
We have a huge week in Thumb Football especially the Tri-Valley East. First up is Caro (3-1) at North Branch (3-1). Dare I say this is a must win for either school's playoff chances. For the sake of argument, I will give Caro wins in their games versus Tawas Area and Cass City, which means they have to win one of these three games - North Branch, Essexville-Garber (3-1), and Millington (4-0). Since Caro has to travel to North Branch and Millington, that would give them home-field advantage against the Dukes, whom they have lost five straight against.
North Branch has a gimme victory in Week 7 versus Bridgeport. A win this week would leave them with needing a victory in one of the following games - Ogemaw Heights (3-1), Millington, or Yale (3-1). North Branch should win this week and probably sneak by Yale to get in the playoffs. My prediction for Caro is 4-5 with the fourth victory coming in Week 9 versus Cass City.
Next up, Millington travels to Essexville-Garber to decide control of the TVCE. Millington does not need to win this game to make the playoffs for the sixth straight year. I give Millington wins versus Birch Run (1-3) and Otisville-Lakeville (1-3) and that guarantees them a spot in the 256. Everyone should expect the Cardinals to come out on fire this week, because a victory would guarantee them their 21st consecutive winning season breaking the Thumb Record previously held by Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port. I am really feeling like Millington will run the table in the 2009 regular-season.
Over in the Greater-Thumb West, Vassar (2-2) hosts Reese (4-0) with their playoff dreams hanging in the balance. In order to make their second-ever appearance in the post-season the Vulcans must win either this week against the Rockets or next week when they host last year's state-runner up Ubly (4-0). If the sports books in Vegas placed odds on Vassar, they would be heavy under-dogs in the next two weeks. Look for Vassar to sit the post-season out in coach Jason Kiss's third season at the helm.
Cass City enters the fifth week of the season with a 2-2 record. The Red Hawks scored just 14 points in their first two games of 2009, but have been on fire in the last two weeks posting 96 points. They should beat USA this week, and lose the following week at Reese. This means that they have to win the final three games all at home. If this happens a possible match-up in Week 9 would pose a 5-3 Cass City versus a possible 5-3 Caro team in the "Battle of M-81". That game can be heard live on Mix 92.1.
Marlette (2-2) started the 2009 campaign strong and then suffered set-backs in the last two weeks. The Red Raiders will have to win either the Sandusky (3-1) game this week, or the Brown City (4-0) game in order to make the playoffs for the third consecutive season.
The chance to play spoiler has been anointed to Kingston, Mayville, and USA this year. All three teams are 0-4 and may struggle to win 1-2 games this year. Perennial playoff teams Kingston and USA will stay home come the weekend of October 30th for the second straight season, while Mayville will look to next year to make the playoffs for the the first time in school history.
Frankenmuth (1-3) will have to win their remaining five games to make the playoffs. Not an unprecented accomplishment in this area - Laker High accomplished the feat last year. With a game against Garber in Week 7, I expect the Eagles to stay home for the third time in the last four years.
