MHSAA may get rival

from the Detroit Free Press: Robert Davis has accomplished a lot in his 28 years. Davis, a Highland Park school board member since 2002, holds the season record for rebounding at Michigan-Dearborn, where he earned NAIA academic All-America honors. He also has been a newspaper intern and AAU coach. But Davis' next undertaking might be the most daunting task he ever will attempt. Davis will announce next week the formation of an athletic association to rival the Michigan High School Athletic Association, which sanctions most athletic events statewide. The MHSAA has an operating budget of $8.4 million for 2007-08. It has been around for 84 years and has 767 member high schools. If even one school defected it would be news. But Davis plans to start the Amateur Athletic Association of Michigan this fall. It will offer football, girls and boys basketball and wrestling. He said he has received pledges of more than $2 million from individuals whom he declines to name because they want to r

Official Boys District Picks

Here are my boys district picks for this week. Hopefully, I will get a few more correct than last week. District 57B - Millington Millington over Croswell-Lexington Vassar over Caro Millington over Yale Vassar over North Branch Millington over Vassar. They have played two close games with Millington coming out on top both times. I think the Frankenmuth win will propel Millington to their first district crown since 1999. District 58B - Essexville-Garber Frankenmuth over Bridgeport. Here I go again picking a team to win for the 3rd time this year, but I do not see Frankenmuth losing 3 games in a row. Freeland over Essexville-Garber Frankenmuth over Bangor-John Glenn Pinconning over Freeland Frankenmuth over Pinconning for a repeat district championship. District 81C - Marlette Burton-Bentley over Sandusky Brown City over Marlette Burton-Bentley over Dryden Brown City over Memphis Burton-Bentley over Brown City . This was a difficult pick, but Bentley has played a difficult sc

Tuscola County Sports Boys Player of the Year

Image
As chosen by the readers of this blog, Frankenmuth senior Brad Redford is the boys high school Player of the Year. Redford garnered 58% of the vote. Brandon Bitzer of USA finished in 2nd place getting 30% of the vote. Dustin Griesing (12%) of Millington rounded out the voting. Brad, feel free to browse by the blog and download your trophy.

Redford should be Mr. Basketball

Brad is on a roll. This stat line from the last week deserves a double-take. Brad Redford is definitely tuning up for the playoffs. Last Tuesday, he dumped in 50 points against Caro. Then on Friday night, Redford dropped 52 points on Vassar. In a makeup game on Saturday night in North Branch, his state-record 102 consecutive free throws made came to an end as the senior racked up 38 points on the Broncos. Then, Tuesday night against Garber, Redford set a school record by scoring 53 points on the Dukes. That's 193 points in his last four games, an average of over 48 points a game. Also, Redford just set a state record on Tuesday night, when he connected on his 116th three pointer of the season in the win over Garber. He's closing in on an average of 40+ points a game, which is almost unheard of in this era of the defensive dominated style of play that everyone employs. And yet, there are still those in the media who oppose Redford as the easy choice for Mr. Basketball. The Sagin
