MHSAA may get rival - UPDATE

It looks like this has some legs. Here is the Free Press article: Reactions to the organization that hopes to rival the Michigan High School Athletic Association has been "very receptive." That's the message Amateur Athletic Association of Michigan founder Robert Davis was trying to project at Wednesday's news conference formally announcing the formation of the non-profit organization that hopes to sponsor postseason play in high school football, and boys and girls basketball in the fall. On hand for the announcement at the AFSCME building in Detroit was former University of Michigan basketball standout Jimmy King, who will serve as the executive director. "I have to credit Robert and Gary for standing up and going against the grain," said Southfield board of education secretary Darryle Buchanan, who stood alongside King and Davis at the conference. Besides Southfield, Davis said he has met with the school districts of Detroit, Saginaw, Ann Arbor, Harper Wo

BREAKING NEWS.....Griesing named All-Thumb Player of the Year

No Apologies necessary. Millington's Dustin Griesing has been named the 2007-08 All-Thumb boys basketball Player of the Year by the Thumb Sportswriters Association. Griesing now becomes the first ever athlete to claim the boys basketball and football Players of the Year trophies in the same year, quite an athletic accomplishment and the fact that this feat was done by a kid from Tuscola County makes it even more special. Being a born-and-raised Millington kid myself, I think that Dustin Griesing is a fine young man and good representative for the entire Millington community. We couldn't be more proud of everything he has accomplished throughout the 2007-08 athletic seasons. Being named All-Thumb Player is a big deal! There are 26 high schools in the Thumb Area, and if you factor in that each school might have anywhere from 12-15 kids on a high school varsity basketball team---that means that Griesing has been honored as the best boys basketball player out of perhaps 350-400 s

You spin me right round baby...

The MHSAA spins their own version (and of course in a BS PC way) of how they strongarmed the coaches to stop play. My main beef...if they KNEW what they were going to do, why not announce it after the 7th OT? Maybe the kids would have played all out and not so defensively in the "final" period. And if there is this "no game on Sunday rule", fine, play til midnight then...it was 11:35 when they called it. Plus if you listed to this guy, he admits he "told" not asked the Marquette and OLSM administrations and coaches on what was going to happen. I really need to get a hold of my buddy's little bro and get his take. He plays for the Redmen. UPDATE: A fine story by the Time Herald's (Port Huron) Matt Schoch. Story here:

We Play To Win The Game!

UPDATE!!!! MSHS Coach Joe Papin responds on NMU hockey broadcast Sunday night. OK, first off: This has NOTHING to do with Tuscola Co. But it has EVERYTHING to do with high school sports. Saturday night, after 8 overtimes in the MHSAA Division 1 State Finals for hockey, the game was called a tie (1-1) between Orchard Lake St. Mary's and Marquette Senior High. Yup, co-champions! What the truck is that about? What if this was a semi-final game? Would they have stopped it? No. It was the easy, "Bud Selig" way to do it. And forget about a shootout. That is an NHL regular season thing to do. This is the playoffs. You play to see who is the best. Heck, why have playoffs? Let's just award every kid a medal and a state championship trophy at the end of the season for every sport. Forget next weekend at the Breslin. Congrats to all the teams that made the quarterfinals. The season is over. You all win. Hang a banner now! Disgusting. Regardless, congrats to the Redmen and Eaglet

We will be in Imlay City this Monday covering the Class B Regional Semi-Final between Tuscola County's Millington Cardinals and the Fowlerville Gladiators from Livingston County. The Gladiators led by Coach Fred Hackett play in the Capitol Area Activities Conference (CAAC). Fowlerville (18-5 overall) finished in 2nd place in the CAAC Gold Division with a record of 7-3. District Champions!!

Cardinals Rule. Faced with a 10-point deficit as the game entered the fourth quarter, Millington staged an amazing comeback on Friday night. Led by Dustin Griesing's nine fourth quarter points, the Cardinals erased the deficit against North Branch and won, 52-49, taking the Class B, District 57 championship as well. The District title is the first boys title for the school since 1999. Griesing was 'Mr. Clutch' down the stretch. The senior calmly was 6-for-6 in free throws within the game's last minute of play, giving his team the title over the Broncos. It was obvious that Griesing was not going to allow his team to lose, as he put them on his back and carried them to the title when they needed it most. Millington, down by as much as 12 in the third quarter (34-22), was in desperate need of an offensive spark when the game entered the fourth. Griesing, as much the general on the court as he was on the football field, took over at the point and directed the comeback. Nor
