Millington hype
This one's for Coach Furno
I was asked for a favor Sunday at Cardinal's Pizza in Millington before we recorded our podcast during Selection Sunday. Millington coach Furno asked me to look up an article that appeared in the Bay City Times after the Cardinals defeated Garber, 20-19, back on September 26. Furno had heard that apparently the Garber coach said some things that might provide some 'bulletin-board material' for his team.
Well coach, I couldn't get a hard-copy of the article, but I did find it on-line. Here you go:
Millington 20, Essexville Garber 19

MILLINGTON – Essexville Garber grabbed a two-touchdown halftime lead here Friday night in a key matchup of Tri-Valley East unbeatens. But the Dukes coughed up the ball on five of their six second-half possessions and fell to Millington 20-19. Garber scored on a first quarter Andrew Aho five-yard yard run, and the Mike Schroeder PAT made it 7-0 in favor of the Dukes. Garber made it 13-0 at the half after Shane O'Mara's 15-yard interception return. But in the second half the Dukes lost two fumbles, threw a pair of interceptions and had a punt blocked. And that led to three Cardinals touchdowns.
"I have to give a lot of credit to Millington, they fought back and won on their homecoming," said Garber coach Dave Schwartz. "Now we have to pick up the pieces and rebound from this and we will."
Garber, which is ranked sixth in Division 5, is now 4-1 and 2-1 in the TVE. Millington is 3-0 in league play and 5-0 overall. Millington scored 20 unanswered points to claim a 20-13 lead before Garber quarterback Jake Hebert hooked up with Schroeder on a 13-yard TD pass. The Dukes opted to go for the two-point conversion but came up short.
"I feel bad for my boys because we were the better football team," Schwartz said. "We were the more physical team tonight."
Aho rushed for 196 yards on 34 carries to lead Garber's offense. O'Mara had 10 tackles and Jimmy Cornejo added seven for the Dukes. Garber hosts Caro in another TVE contest on Friday.
