Mix 92.1 WIDL Game of the Week - II

The Millington Cardinals defeated Fowlerville on Monday night to move into the Regional Final game against the Powers Catholic Chargers. Powers moved to the final game by defeating Ponitac Notre Dame Prep by a score of 75-57.

The Chargers compete in the Big Nine Conference in Genesee County. The Big Nine comprises of Davison, Carmen-Ainsworth, Flushing, Powers Catholic, Grand Blanc, and Kearsley. Yes, only six schools in conference called the Big Nine, obviously counting problems like the Big Ten. Tim Herman has coached this team to an overall record of 17-7, along with a 2nd place finish in the Big Nine. The Chargers have scoring average of 69.2 points per game, while giving up 56.4.

Powers has been primarily led all season by the Moreland brothers. Younger brother Shane (#2), a 6'2" junior guard, leads the team in scoring with an average of 19.2. Older brother Tyler (#1), a 6'3" senior guard, is 2nd on the team scoring 16.3 points per game. Rounding out the leading scorers are 6'3" sophomore forward Patrick O'Brien (#51) with an average of 11.6, and 5'11" freshman point guard Patrick Lucas-Perry (#20), with an average of 9.3.

If the name Lucas-Perry sounds familiar, it should. Big brother Laval just transferred from the University of Arizona, and will play basketball for the University of Michigan next winter. Also, Powers 6'4" freshman Charley Herzog's brother (Tom) plays for Tom Izzo and Michigan State University.

The only opponent that Millington and Powers have in common is Birch Run. Millington lost to Birch Run twice this year, by the scores of 79-55 and 56-49. The Chargers defeated the Panthers 78-60 in the district quarterfinals on February 25.

The Chargers swept through District 56 by defeating Birch Run, Goodrich (90-58), and Flint Northwestern (73-65). They have really picked up their game in the playoffs averaging 79 points per game.

Powers has played 4 teams that are still in the playoffs. They defeated Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard (C) 77-60, and Nouvel Catholic Central (C) 79-65. They lost to Orchard Lake St. Mary (A) 79-74, and Detroit Country Day (B) 45-42. Meanwhile, Millington has only played one school, Frankenmuth (B). The Cardinals split the season series with the Eagles, losing 84-59 and winning 55-44.

The winner of this game will move to the North Branch quarterfinals to face either Madison Heights Madison or Detroit Country Day.

Game time is 7 pm with all the action starting at 6:30 pm with the pre-game show. Jon, Andrew, Bryan, Chad (The Mayor), and myself will record the pre-game at the Overlook in downtown Vassar tonight. Come over and join our live audience.
