BREAKING NEWS.....Griesing named All-Thumb Player of the Year
No Apologies necessary.
Millington's Dustin Griesing has been named the 2007-08 All-Thumb boys basketball Player of the Year by the Thumb Sportswriters Association.
Griesing now becomes the first ever athlete to claim the boys basketball and football Players of the Year trophies in the same year, quite an athletic accomplishment and the fact that this feat was done by a kid from Tuscola County makes it even more special.
Being a born-and-raised Millington kid myself, I think that Dustin Griesing is a fine young man and good representative for the entire Millington community. We couldn't be more proud of everything he has accomplished throughout the 2007-08 athletic seasons.
Being named All-Thumb Player is a big deal! There are 26 high schools in the Thumb Area, and if you factor in that each school might have anywhere from 12-15 kids on a high school varsity basketball team---that means that Griesing has been honored as the best boys basketball player out of perhaps 350-400 student athletes!
Despite of what has been stated in the past and what has been currently written in local papers, Griesing has nothing to apologize about as far as being named the winner over others who weren't even eligible. The TSA long ago ironed out the boundaries of the All-Thumb region. There is no question anymore as to who is in and who is out. Dustin was easily voted in as Player of the Year. Period.
Way to go Dustin....the entire Millington alumni base and every former Cardinal athlete who ever wore the red-and-white is proud of you!
Rumors of consolidation.
Rumor has it that Akron-Fairgrove High School is exploring the option of Co-oping their high school football players with Owen-Gage.
The Bulldogs already let kids from Caseville co-op to play football. Adding a few more kids from A-F would be good. It would undoubtedly make the team more competitive in the NCTL.
It would be sad to see the Akron-Fairgrove tradition come to an end, but that's the way things are now. These small schools in the Thumb are having a tough time in keeping their doors open. Port Hope already cancelled their spring sports and they are allowing their athletes to participate for Harbor Beach.

Comments
It is true that Port Hope canceled its baseball season, but that's it.

Congrats to Dustin, I agree - no aplologies needed because 'Muth is not and never has been a part of the area the TSA considered "The Thumb". It is like an aplology to a kid from Ohio for not being considered for Michigan's Mr Basketball award.
Sorry to those that took it that way.
And congrats to the rest of the guys for their great seasons. The Rockets were such a great team, it was hard to single out any player as being bounds and leaps better than their teammate. Ty was just the best choice.
Tim played so well, despite possibly playing with some lingering football injuries, and was a true "Big Man" in the GTW this season.
The rest of the Huron/Sanilac Co. kids were rightly deserved also. Dubs stats were impressive and I'm sure he could have started almost anywhere. I saw Donovan play twice and knew he belonged while I never got a chance to see Overstreet, but I knew of him to be a good athlete seeing him play football.
