I'm getting old

Today marks the beginning of my 33rd year living on this planet. It's been an interesting ride so far; there were a few speed bumps along the way that I drove over way too fast while arriving at this point, but overall, it's been a pretty smooth trip getting to where I am. Here's hoping this year is just as good as the last.

The second quarter begins. Tonight, the new year of high school basketball gets back on track with a slew of interesting area games.
Jon will be calling North Branch at Caro on 92.1 FM. (I'm taking the night off.)
Other TVE matchups are Millington at Birch Run, Vassar at Frankenmuth and Garber-Bridgeport.
I can't wait to see the final score on the Kingston-Ak-Fairgrove game. This one will not be pretty.
I get the feeling that the Vikings have quit on their coach. Rumor has it that coach Westover can't even get these kids to attend practice on a regular basis. How much losing can someone handle before you just throw in the towel? It has to be depressing when you know the game is lost before you even lace up your sneakers...but that's no reason to quit!!
What ever happened to self-pride? What ever happened to playing for honor?
I saw A-F last month when they were pasted by a bad Port Hope team, and they honestly looked like a team that had stopped caring. Now, who's to blame for this?

Nepotism to the rescue. Ofcourse, we should have able to see this all along. The Lions were last in the NFL this year in rushing offense, I believe they were the worst in scoring percentage when inside their own 20 yard line, so, ofcourse the answer to all the Lions woes was to hang the blame on the defense.
This past week, the Lions fired defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson and Marinelli, who reminds me of a cross between Bobby Ross' hard ass approach and Wayne Fontes' annoying optimism, hired former Tampy Bay assistant Jon Barry to lead the new-look Lions defense.
Sounds great except for the fact that Barry is Marinell's son-in-law. I can see it know--Marinelli's daughter sits on daddy's lap on Christmas and tells daddy that what she really wants for Christmas is a better paying job for her husband. And ofcourse, like a good father, he complies by giving the old son-in-law the head defensive job in D-town.
The Lions are a train wreck that you just can't help but watch; it's like watching clumsy people dance, or people who clearly cannot carry a note in a ten gallon bucket make fools of themselves auditioning for idiotic reality shows. We, as a generation, enjoy viewing the humiliation and the denegration of others, and the best reality show is sports. The Lions have been providing comic fodder for years and it doesn't look like it's going to get any better.

No I don't have an answer for UM. Carr and his Woverines failed to show up at another Rose Bowl, as the boys in blue were whipped by a good USC team on Monday. I don't get it why it keeps happening, but the Big Ten has to take a closer look at their scheduling. The Big Ten has been getting beat in their bowl games and maybe it has something to do with the fact that all of the Big Ten teams have been out of action for almost six weeks or more.
The Big Ten bigwigs decided that they wanted their season to be completed by Thanksgiving, when other conferences, including the Pac 10, saw their seasons pull to a close sometime the second weekend of December. As anyone knows, especially all those weekend warriors who still try to give it their all when they, the longer the layoff between performances translates into a guaranteed poor performance. UM was rusty, USC was not. Plus the Wolverines were outcoached but that's for another time.

The Tigers threw off my annual fall routine by making the World Series, but because of the situation, I didn't care. Now that the Lions are finished (I actually wrote them off about two months ago) and now that UM football has ended, it's time to enter my annual mid-winter routine. Time to cheer for the Red Wings and start counting the days until pitchers and catchers report for spring training (maybe in around six weeks or so.) Go Wings!!
