Roehl Has Breakout Game

MAYVILLE – The Mayville girl’s basketball team entered Friday night’s game averaging just 12.5 points in the first half of their games. The Wildcats needed a fast start to propel their team to victory. The fast start came from junior Chelsea Roehl who scored 12 first quarter points on her way to a game-high 21. She also contributed with 7 rebounds. Mayville defeated Cass City 58-31, while leading 29-15 at halftime.

“That was a breakout game for Chelsea,” stated first-year Coach Tom Elenbaum. “We’ve been waiting for that for a long time. When she was a freshman, she averaged about 20 points per game, and she hasn’t done that since. This was her breakout game, so watch out now.”

The game was actually very close early in the first quarter. Roehl hit two long range three-point field goals. Each three was followed by long three-pointers by Cass City’s Jennica Richards. Richards finished the game with a team-high 13 points.

At the 3:14 mark of the first quarter, Red Hawk sophomore McKensie Parrish scored a bucket to give her team the lead 9-8. Parrish finished the game with six points. Cass City would not score again for over five and one-half minutes while Mayville would score 12 straight points to put the game out of reach.

“We picked up the intensity of our defense a little bit, and our press started to bother them,” stated Elenbaum. “We got over on the trap right away, and that really turned the game around for us. We got a couple of easy steals, a couple of easy baskets, and then away we went.”

The leaders of the trap were Roehl, Tessa Buhl, and Amy Elenbaum. Buhl finished the game with four points, while Elenbaum finished with 12 points, all coming on three-point baskets.

“Chelsea and Tessa really do a very good job on the wings,” said Coach Elenbaum. “Amy comes across the middle very good to force the ball one way into a trap. As a team, we do a really good job with that.”

In the middle quarters, Mayville slowed the high-tempo offense down a little bit, and tried to pound the ball down low to their post players, Chelsea LaBair and Rachel Pyles. LaBair finished with two points and eight rebounds. Pyles finished the game with five points. After scoring 20 points in the first quarter, Mayville scored 9 points in the second quarter and 10 in the third.

“Even though they are a smaller team we thought we could run up and down the floor and tire them out a little,” said Elenbaum. “We then thought we could put our big girls in and pound the ball down low to them. We did exactly that.”
Mayville would once again turn up the tempo in the fourth quarter outscoring Cass City, 19-10. In the fourth, senior Morgan Bell and senior BriAnn Summersett would score all four of their points respectively. Roehl would also add her last four points of the game.

“It feels great to get out first home win of the season,” said Elenbaum.
