Cardinal Boys Complete Double-Header Sweep
LAKEVILLE – After watching their female counterparts use defense to stop the Lakeville Falcons earlier in the night, the Millington Cardinal boys basketball team wanted to try to win the same way. The Cards did just that and more, holding the Falcons without a point for over two minutes on three separate occasions in their 65-52 victory on Tuesday night. Two of those stretches lasted over four minutes.
“We just had too many turnovers and too much foul trouble,” said first-year Lakeville Coach Rob Robbins.
Millington used a strong slashing offense in the first quarter. As a result of the offense, Lakeville got into early foul trouble. Millington shot 13 free throws in the first quarter on their way to a 14-6 lead. Tyler Reinert and Michael Tisdale led the early charge for the Cardinals as they each scored six points. Reinert finished the game with a game-high 16 points and a game-high seven steals. Tisdale finished with 14 points all coming in the first half.
“We really had a few guys step up tonight,” said Millington’s fourth-year Coach, Walt Kujat. “I was really impressed with Tyler’s play. He did a great job of handling the pressure and keeping his composure. He was really a playmaker when we needed him to be one.”
“Michael Tisdale is the other guy that really impressed me tonight,” continued Kujat. “He is kind of an unknown to us. We know he has potential. He really stepped up, and did some good things for us, so we are proud of him.”
Millington’s defense was the key through the next two quarters. Their man-to-man defense caused many Falcon turnovers which turned into easy Millington scores.
“We tried to increase the tempo a little bit tonight,” said Kujat. “Kyle Hemingway had a tremendous game defending the point. He is such a tenacious defender, and does so many little things that most people do not see.”
Hemingway finished the game with 11 points, all in the second half, and five steals.
Lakeville made their run in the fourth quarter, when they began to use their inside-outside game with success, but it was too late. Senior forward Michael Fox and senior forward Cody Hogard scored six and five points respectively from the inside, while junior guard Zachary Snider scored six points from the outside. Fox finished the game with a team-high 14 points. Hogard scored 13 points, while Snider scored 13 points including three three-pointers.
“We played hard,” said Robbins. “We made a run at them in the fourth quarter, but we just have to take care of the ball better.”
Even though Millington ended up winning the game by 13 points, Coach Kujat stated that his inexperienced team needed to work on a few things.
“This was a discovery period for us, with the graduation of a great senior class last year,” said Kujat. “We had 25 turnovers tonight. Chalk it up to first game jitters, but we really need to control the ball more. That is something we need to focus on. Our bench came in and played some good minutes, but they still have a lot to learn.”
