Doshier Drop 20 on Falcons
LAKEVILLE – Millington’s Kayla Doshier had another big game on Tuesday night. She scored 18 of her game-high 20 points in the final three quarters to help her team defeat the Lakeville Lady Falcons 45-26. Through three games this season Doshier is now averaging 20.7 points per game.
“I thought Kayla did a good job tonight,” said Millington Coach Mike Gohsman. “Lakeville played her box-on-one a little bit. She did not get frustrated. She played within herself, and took her shots when they were there. She dished the ball well tonight and rebounded well also. Kayla had a good game all around tonight.”
Lakeville’s box-on-one defense worked on Doshier in the first quarter limiting her to just two points. What Lakeville (0-3) did not count on is the hot first quarter shooting of senior forward Jamie Frahm and senior guard Rachel Lawe of Millington (2-1). Frahm scored seven of her 11 points in the quarter, and Lawe scored four of her eight points to help pace the Cardinals to a 16-6 lead after the first stanza.
The Lady Falcons came out in the second quarter determined to change the pace of the game. Lakeville did just that as they outscored Millington 6-2 through the first 5:11 of the second quarter. Lakeville put their size advantage to use as sophomore center Kayla Spohn scored four of her team high eight points in the quarter, and senior center Erin Thorpe also scored a bucket in the frame. If not for a buzzer beating shot by Doshier, Lakeville would have cut into Millington’s lead. Heading into the half Millington held a 27-16 lead.
“We are always going to be undersized,” said Gohsman. “We know that, so we concentrate on trying to take control of the game defensively.”
Millington did just that. They came out in the second half in a full court press and limited the Lady Falcons to just four buckets and 10 points in the second half.
“We thought we could press them a little bit in the second half,” stated Gohsman. “With Ashley Gavitt out, our speed is limited a little bit. The press ended up being effective for us, and it caused some turnovers. We wanted to go a little more up tempo, and that worked for us.”
Millington’s interior defense eliminated Lakeville’s size advantage in the second half.
“We did a pretty good job on our interior defense,” said Gohsman. “I though Chelsey Parker did a good job rebounding wise, and was also every effective defensively with Alexis Reinert.”
Parker finished the game with three points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Reinert chipped in with one point.
“We thought we would have a good chance coming down here,” said Gohsman. “We played great defense tonight, especially in the second half.”
