Vassar Rushes past Caro in 2nd Half

VASSAR - Vassar Head Coach Jason Kiss knew he needed to make adjustments at the half. His team was trailing 9-7, and getting beat badly on both sides of the ball. Coach Kiss decided to abandon his team's double tight end set and move to a more spread offense. His team responded by scoring 4 rushing touchdowns in the 2nd half to get a 36-21 win on their home field.

Vassar opened the scoring in the 1st quarter on their 3rd play from scrimmage. Dontay Crist (11 carries 121 yards 2 TD) scampered to his left a ended up in the end zone 67 yards later. Vassar would only get one more play in the quarter. Caro took the ball and moved it down field behind the strength of their offensive line, anchored by Hallie Holmes. Caro's drive would stall at the 11 yard line, and they had to settle for a 16 yard Seth Kratz field goal. Vassar's next play resulted in an interception by quarterback Zach Germain. Caro promptly followed Holmes and the offensive line to down the field. This time hitting pay dirt as Brandon Hercliff (17 carries 63 yards 1 TD) would run 8 yards for the touchdown with 9.5 seconds remaining in the quarter. Caro's onside kick attempt would work only to find themselves fumble the ball away to Vassar as the quarter ended. The score would remain 9-7 Caro until the 2nd half.

Vassar received the kickoff in the 2nd half and never looked back. Zach Germain ran 3 straight quarter back draws and then on the 6 play of the quarter Keif Vickers (8 carries 141 yards 2 TD) hit pay dirt from 34 yards out. Vassar bottled Caro up on the next drive. Caro's fake punt failed and Vassar went back to work scoring again. This time they scored on a 35 yard Vickers scamper, set up by a great block by wide receiver Jeremy Schiefer (1 reception 18 yards). Vassar would gain all the momentum and head into the 4th quarter with a 21-9 lead.

Just as the 4th quarter began, Caro sophomore quarterback Caled Sundblad (7 completions 12 attempts 140 yards 2 TD) hit wide receiver Rexford Fritz (3 receptions 46 yards 1 TD) from 6 yards out to close the game to 21-15. Vassar's running game would not let up as Germain rolled into the end zone 3 minutes later from 2 yards out. Germain set his touchdown up by running for 60 yards 3 plays earlier. Germain hit Schiefer for the 2 point conversion for a 29-15 lead. Vassar's defense stiffened up again and turned the ball over to the offense, only to see Crist score from 7 yards out. The touchdown was set up by a nifty 43 yard run by Vickers. Caro's Sundblad would hit Tim Curtis (3 receptions 78 yards 1 TD) from 8 yards out to finish the scoring at Vassar 36 Caro 21.

Vassar's Zach Germain finished the night with 154 yards rushing on 9 carries. He also passed for 25 yards on 2 completions and 5 attempts. He was intercepted twice. Congratulations to Germain to being named this blog's Player of the Game. Vassar will welcome Laker High in their first Greater Thumb West Conference game. Caro will play host to Bridgeport to start their conference play.

Mix 92.1 will be at Frankenmuth, as they host the Broncos from North Branch.

This was a very good game. Much better than the score showed. Caro played a good defense. Several great tackles by Mike Greene and Seth Kratz.
Anon,

This was a very good game in the first half. After the half, there was not any doubt in my mind who was going to win. Caro's offensive line played very. If their skilled positions grow quickly they will have a good season.

Keif Vickers ran with great vision and balance against Caro. If he can contain that he will have a great year.
