Basketball Districts, deer camp, UM-OSU, and goodnight Bo.

Girl's Basketball -

Cass City proved me wrong in a big way!
The other day I said that Frankenmuth would win the District Title, and for the first half of the game, it looked as though I would be right. Frankenmuth's tenacious defense propelled them to an early 17-7 lead, and the Eagles cruised to an easy 19-11 halftime advantage. It looked as though the Eagle 'D' was going to dominate the game and end up being the difference in Frankenmuth's Title chase.
That was before Emily Schinnerer started to play the way that she is capable if playing. Cass City's leading scorer dropped in 11 in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to one (27-26) at the end of the third. The Hawks' Sarah Meeker had a big fourth quarter. The senior center was a monster on the boards the whole game (16 rebs. for the game) and she poured in nine in the final quarter, and the Hawks stole the trophy from the Eagles grasp. Cass City's offense proved to be the difference in the game, as the Hawks outscored the TVE champs 32-19 in the second half.
And just like that, the Hawks were District Champs again.
Schinnerer ended up with 22 points, while Meeker chipped in 13, and the Hawks looked like the dominent team that I saw beat up Mayville and Reese during the season. They have had their ups and downs (I saw them lose to Lakers in a game they should have won, and I saw them blow a 10-point lead at Caro). When Schinnerer is on her game, she is one the best players in this area of the state. She has a quick first step, drives to the hoop with a lot of authority, and knows how to finish. She can drive with either hand, has a decent jump shot, and is tough to contain.
Schinnerer has been bothered lately by a sore elbow, and she told me after the game that it is still bothering her a little bit, but she feels that she just has to suck it up and play through it.
I will be at Cass City's game Monday night, as the Hawks now advance to the Regionals in Alma. In the first round of play, the Hawks square off against Swan Valley.
The Vikings (17-6) defeated Chesaning (20-3) in the district final in Chesaning, 39-34. Swan Valley looks as though they are a real good team, but if Schinnerer gets going, look for the Hawks to advance.

Way to go O-G!
I was right about the Lady Dawgs, as Owen-Gage fought back and beat Caseville 40-37 in Class D action from Friday night.
Sophomore Amanda Faist led the charge, putting in a game-high 13, as the Dawgs charged back from an early 14-7 deficit to win the game. Owen-Gage's win gives us two Tuscola County area teams with District titles (Marlette lost 42-36 to Sandusky, as predicted.)
O-G only won five games in the regular season, but now they have won three in post season play, as the Dawgs seemed to have peaked at just the right time. Monday, O-G has to travel to Owosso to play in the No. 28 Regionals against Genesee Christian, who won the No. 111 Class D District championship Friday night with a 63-14 drubbing of Flint Valley Christian Academy.
Owen-Gage is playing with a lot of confidence right now, and I don't think they are going to lose just yet.

Deer camp and UM drops a close one:
I just got home today from deer camp, where I went yet another year without getting a buck (that makes 18 consecutive years without a deer.) I didn't even go in the woods this year. I got to camp about 1 am. I worked the Cass City-Frankenmuth game Friday night, and we didn't send the TCA to print until 11 pm, so after two hours of driving, I went to bed when I got there.
Saturday we all went out to watch the UM-OSU game.
It was a great game, but in the end, Troy Smith was just too good, as the Buckeyes won the Big Ten and a definite spot in the National Championship game with a 42-39 win over the Wolverines.
It all came down to one play: Shawn Crable's helmet-to-helmet hit on Troy Smith in the fourth quarter gave the Buckeyes an automatic first down when if Crable would have just left Smith alone, the Wolverines would have gotten the ball back with just a 35-32 deficit. It was fourth down, the pass was incomplete, and the UM defense had shut the OSU defense down to pull the momentum away from the hometeam.
After the penalty, the Buckeyes scored (ofcourse) and took a 42-32 lead, essentially ending UM's chances.
Should UM get a rematch?
No...perhaps if we had a playoff system, UM could win a few games and earn another shot at the Buckeyes. But for now, we have to deal with the B(s)CS, and I don't believe that UM will stay at number two.
If Florida wins the SEC, then the Gators will be playing OSU on January 8th.

Say it ain't so Bo:
When I heard the news about Bo Schembechler Friday afternoon, I was shocked. Bo has had heart problems for almost forty years, so when news reports were saying that a heart attack was the cause of Bo's demise, I couldn't believe it. Bo was the type of person who seemed like he would live forever. But one can only cheat death for so long before death finally catches up to you.
My first memories of UM were of watching the 1981 Rose Bowl with my dad. UM beat Washington that day to get Bo his first ever Rose Bowl win. I remember the look of jubilation on Bo's face, and I remember my father jumping for joy as his Wolverines won. I was instantly hooked and have bled Maize and Blue ever since.
Bo was a monster of a man and his imprint on UM football will live on forever. He will be missed!
Side note: I though Mitch Albom said it best, as his thoughts on Bo which were played at halftime of the game was brilliantly written. With that said, there's nothing else to say about the subject.
