Can't wait for Friday night!!
It's almost here. This is it...the week we've all been waiting for since the last Tuscola County area team was eliminated from the playoffs last November....FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL IS BACK!!!
We've been working our butts off putting together what we hope is the most comprehensive high school football preview in the Mid-Michigan area, and I think we did a pretty good job.
The preview came out today, and everything looks great!
It's 16 pages stock full of info on all 13 area teams, schedules from all teams in the three county area (34 in all) and plenty of other 'stuff' that we just had to include.
92.1 will broadcast the Marlette-Kingston game this Friday, with Jon and Christian calling all the action from the booth.
I will be at the Mt. Morris-Millington game, eager to see how the Cardinal offense will look with Roger Bearss in charge of calling the plays. According the players, it's going to be fun.
We have photo guys all over the county this Friday night, with pics coming in from the Kingston game, the Yale-Caro game, the Bentley-Mayville game and the Reese-Hemlock game.
The Saturday morning Advertiser will be the Thumb football fans first look at all the area scores from all the area teams, with what we hope is the Thumb fans most comprehensive and indepth high school football rag.
This should be an exciting season, and the Advertiser will be right there, bringing fans the most complete look at Tuscola County area football!
My picks. Here they are, my picks for each of four area conferences:
Tri-Valley East
1. Millington
2. Garber
3. Vassar
4. Birch Run
5. Frankenmuth
6. North Branch
7. Caro
8. Bridgeport
Greater Thumb West
1. USA
2. Reese
3. Cass City
4. BCAS
5. Laker
6. Bad Axe
7. Buena Vista
Greater Thumb East
1. Ubly
2. Harbor Beach
3. Deckerville
4. Marlette
5. Mayville
6. Sandusky
7. Brown City
North Central Thumb
1. Memphis
2. Kingston
3. North Huron
4. Peck
5. Owen-Gage
6. CPS
7. Dryden
8. Akron-Fairgrove
New faces, new (and old) coaches. The TVE has four new coaches this year (well, five if you count the situation in North Branch, but more on that in a minute).
Vassar hired 33-year old Jason Kiss to lead the Vulcans. Kiss spent last year as the D-coordinator in Vassar and worked the previous nine years at Nouvel CC.
Caro brought back Al Boydston to try to breath some life into a dead Tiger program. Caro has won just three games in the last two years, and hopefully Boydston can restore some of the roar for Caro.
Bridgeport convinced 72-year old Mel Skillman to take over the Bearcats. Skillman has not been a head coach since 2004, when he retired from Merrill, where his offense was known as 'Air Skillman.' It was not uncommon for Merrill to throw the ball up to 30 times a game or more, so lets see if Skillman can get some of the Bridgeport athletes to play in his fun offense.
And while the Eric Hyde situation works itself out, North Branch has promoted Pat Forster and Lyle Jamison from the JV to run the varsity. This could be a distraction to the players, but lets hope not.
Two more days. Kickoff is Friday night at 7pm. Turn on your radios at 6:30 and tune in to 92.1 for Jon and I doing a pregame kickoff show. I'm not promising anything, but it will be informative.
