Weekend playoff preview

Here's a closer look at this weekend's sports playoffs:

Division 2 baseball
Region 14 at Dewitt - North Branch (16-20) vs. Fowlerville (29-6-1); Mt. Morris (33-6) vs. Lake Odessa Lakewood (24-17)
The Broncos improbable run to a district championship is not surprising.
NB has a big-time player in senior Matt Jacobson, who hit .481 during the regular season, striking out just five times in 96 plate appearances.
Jacobson also led his team in wins with an ERA of 1.92 and 84 K's in 76 innings.
Unfortunately, Jacobson and the Broncos have to face a tough Fowlerville team.
Picks: Fowlerville 9, North Branch 4
Mt. Morris 6, LO Lakewood 2
Finals: Mt. Morris 4, Fowlerville 2

Division 3 baseball
Region 24 at Bad Axe - Mayville vs. Almont; Unionville Sebewaing vs. Madison Heights Bishop Foley (22-12)
The Wildcats might be the sleeper pick here, even though they won the GTE with a 12-0 conference record.
The Cats Justin Lugowski was 6-0 on the regular season and coach Aaron McCormack has six hitters batting over .300 on the season, with Corey Travis leading at .426.
USA is tough, but I think Mayville makes it three wins over the Pats this year.
Picks: Mayville 10, Almont 2
USA 8, MH Bishop Foley 1
Finals: Mayville 12, USA 10

Division 2 softball
Region 9 at Gaylord - Cadillac vs. Pinconning; Cheboyan vs. Caro (27-10)
The Tigers have never been this far before and I think that might play a factor into deciding the outcome of their game.
Jon and I are calling this one live on 1360 AM, so check it out on Saturday at 10 am.
Picks: Cheboygan 7, Caro 3
Pinnconning 9, Cadillac 2
Finals: Pinnconning 5, Cheboygan 2

Division 2 softball
Region 14 at Dewitt - Birch Run vs. Eaton Rapids; North Branch vs. Williamston
The other Bronco squad to win a district title last weekend, North Branch underachieved all season to finish near the middle of the pack in the TVE.
NB has four players from their team moving onto the next level, with two heading to D-II schools (Jenni Hart, SVSU and Brianna Stawecki, Northwood) and the other two heading to smaller schools (Amanda Allen, Oakland CC and Karen House, Madonna).
With Kim Currell on the mound, I think the Broncos are through coming up short.
Picks: Eaton Rapids 7, Birch Run 2
North Branch 9, Williamston 1
Finals: North Branch 6, Eaton Rapids 2

Division 3 softball
Region 24 at Bad Axe - Unionville Sebewaing (35-2) vs. Madison Heights Bishop Foley (12-25); Frankenmuth (22-10) vs. Brown City
This has a chance to be the best final of the weekend.
USA is really good, but they cannot play like they did in the district final against Reese last Friday.
USA needed eight innings to dispose of the Rockets, and now they face the prospect of playing a team much better than Reese.
Frankenmuth is the TVE champs who had a pretty easy time with Reese just a week before the playoffs.
The Eagles are playing good ball right now; pitcher Abbey Rodammer does a good job of mixing up her pitches and Kassi Galganski and Sydney Frank both lead with their bats.
On paper, USA wins this one.
But the game is played on the field.
Picks: USA 6, Bishop Foley 2
Frankenmuth 4, Brown City 0
Finals: Frankenmuth 2, USA 1

Division 3 soccer
Region 11 at Montrose - Frankenmuth 1, Saginaw Nouvel 0 Flint Powers Catholic 3, Williamston 1 Final – Frankenmuth (20-2-3) vs. Flint Powers Catholic - 6/8 5
Frankenmuth and coach Paul Stenglein are loaded.
The Eagles Angela Hinds and Erica Meyer are sure bets for All-State.
Powers is no match for the Eagles at this point.
Finals: Frankenmuth 2, Powers 0

I can't understand why both of you would cover Caro, when 4 of your teams were in Bad Axe. Send one to cover Caro and the other to Bad Axe where the majority of your teams were.

I think it's a disservice to your readers.

The only reason we were both in Gaylord was because of the radio broadcast.
Jon needed help on the broadcast, so I went.
