'Muth is really good, USA rocks BCAS

'Muth fires past NB: I went to the Frankenmuth-North Branch game last Friday night (I had to present the All-Thumb trophies to Bone and the North Branch football team.) A few impressions: first, Brad Redford is all he's cracked up to be! Redford got off to a fast start, hitting for 11 points in the first quarter, and he finished the game with 24 as his Eagles beat the Broncos, 66-58.
NB's coach Jim Marshall had a great game plan: use his best athletes, namely Bone and Brandin Friske, to cover Redford one-on-one, and for the most part, the plan worked. Frankenmuth coach Tim Crawford told me after the game that he thought that NB had the best athletes he's seen all year, and that includes Bridgeport. By the 7:42 mark of the first quarter, Bone had already been whistled for two fouls, which freed up Redford a little, and the junior guard responded by hitting three from behind the arc in the first, and the Eagles opened a 17-5 lead after the first. Marshall told me after the game that it is difficult to beat a good team when you fall behind by that much, that early, and I couldn't agree more. Frankenmuth is a good team, maybe the best in the area. They have a lot of team speed, they hit the boards better than anyone I've seen thus far, and they have a good collection of athletes. Expect 'Muth to win a lot of games this year.

USA romps Cougars. Speaking of good teams, last night I was in Unionville to witness the Patriots demolition of BCAS, as USA claimed an important GTW victory last night, beating the Cougars 85-52.
I don't think anyone thought that USA was going to win that game last night by 33 points, but before we go and annoint the Patriots as the best team this side of the Pistons, let's remember that it is early. USA definitely has a good team, but I don't know that I would say they are great. They have a great collection of athletes, they play a solid, harassing defense, and they pressure the ball up the court at a relentless pace, but they lack a go-to guy. USA lacks that one star who can carry a team, the cornerstone that a team looks to to hit the ket shot. Don't get me wrong, they are good. Real good. And maybe as the season pans out, maybe the star-in-waiting for USA will be fleshed out as they grind their way through the GTW. Coach Gainforth definitely has a couple of candidates who appear to be worthy.

Other scores from last night:
Vassar 52, Garber 41. The Vulcans (1-3, 1-2) picked up win number one, led by 15 points from Kevin Bacon. A win tomorrow over winless Mayville would give Vassar the same amount of wins they had all of last year.
'Muth 77, Caro 54. Redford scores just 14, but he rarely played after the first half. Muth (2-2, 2-1 TVE) led 43-23 at the break, as Caro falls to 0-4.
NB 60, Millington 53. The Cardinals lose ftheir first game of the season, in their last game before the break. Kujat has some work to do, but the Cards have more wins at this point (3-1, 2-1) than most people though they would. Bonner had 20 for NB (3-2, 1-2).
Bridgeport 70, Birch Run 62. Bearcats stand alone in first in TVE.

Owen-Gage 54, Port Hope 38. Bulldogs are in first in NCTL North.
N. Huron 83, A-F 36. The Vikings continue to falter and there appears to be no end.
Sandusky 57, Mayville 42. Wildcats fall to 0-5.
Cass City 67, Bad Axe 64
Harbor Beach 55, EPBP 40
Peck at Kingston, ppd.
Ubly 53, Deckerville 42
Brown City 57, Yale 24
Armada 54, Memphis 50

New Top Ten:
1. USA (5-0)
2. Frankenmuth (2-2)
3. Kingston (4-0)
4. North Branch (3-2)
5. Millington (3-1)
6. Cass City (4-1)
7. Reese (3-0)
8. Owen-Gage (3-1)
9. Marlette (1-2)
10. Vassar (1-3)

Three to watch:
1. Kyle Bonner, North Branch: The Broncos point guard is a solid shooter, plays great defense, and dropped 20 on a good Millington team last night.
2. Isaiah Jackson, USA: Maybe the MVP of the season thus far for the Patriots. Not the leading scorer, but USA's point guard is the spark that ignites the Patriots fuse.
3. Eric Zaleski, O-G: The Bulldogs leading scorer has his team undefeated in the NCTL North (3-0), and the Dawgs are the early season surprise in the TCA area.
