Mid-Summer Blues

It's been awhile since I've been on here. I've been busy lately...the kids have kept my hands full and work has kept me pretty busy.
With not much going on around the area lately, there hasn't been much to talk about around here.
There are some new happenings lately, though, and with the beginning of football season a little more than a month away, let's start with that.

Talkin' football...alumni games. This year, there are as many as four alumni football games in and around the Tuscola County area.
Sandusky and Cros-Lex kick off the fun on Saturday, July 21, with the second annual meeting of these teams to take place at Pioneer Field in Croswell.
After two straight years of shutting out Mayville (13-0 in 2005, 47-0 in 2006), Kingston will now play host to the alumni of Peck on the night of July 27, with kickoff scheduled for 8 pm.
Millington and Vassar will play the second edition of their game on Friday, August 3, kickoff at 7 pm.
That game will be played at Vassar and will coincide with the beginning of the town's Riverfest Festival and they area even planning a fireworks display at the football field immediately following the game.
Lastly, on the same night, North Branch will travel to Imlay City and play the Spartan alumni in their second annual game.
Imlay City hopes the game will act as a boost for the start of the town's Blueberry Festival, which takes place the same weekend.
All proceeds from these games will be split and will go the football programs of each respective school, which I think is a great way to raise much needed funds for these programs.
I've heard rumors of other schools trying to get on the alumni bandwagon (like a Frankenmuth-Birch Run game) and perhaps some of the teams that used to participate in these games (Mayville, Lakeville) are looking for new opponents to play.
I might go to at least two of these, perhaps even suit up one last time and play for Millington in the game on August 3.
If I do play, I'm not going to plan on being in the game a whole lot. It's been 15 years since I last played football in pads, so if I just got in on a couple of plays, I'd be happy with that.

MLB All Star Game was great. Once again, Baseball showcased last night why they have the best and mose competitive All Star game of any of the big four professional sports.
The NFL all star game is a joke...it's nothing more than a free trip to Hawaii for the players and their families and the game is played at half speed since no one wants to get hurt.
You reall can't blame them because the season is finished and an injury could ruin their livelihood.
The NHL and NBA all star games are infamous for the overall lack of defense played in their respective games.
The MLB all star is usually a good game, with good defense, tough pitching and neither team wants to lose this one.
Not only is homefield advantage in the World Series up for grabs (which is a terrible idea by the way), but the leagues play for pride.
With the American League claiming 10 wins over the last 11 years in the game (with the other being the awful tie game in 2002), the pride of the junior circuit is at an all time high.
Now, the Tigers have home field advantage in case they make it back to the Fall Classic.

Slowpitch Softball fever. Between my teams regular schedule and with a few weekend tournaments thrown in this month, I have a chance to play in as many as 20 softball games in the month of July.
Our regular season runs until August 20 (we started back on May 7), and we are always looking for a few more tournaments to play in.
We have a tourney in Fostoria this weekend, Bay Amelith on the 21st and one in Vassar on the 27-28.
If anyone knows of any tournaments in August, let me know.
I'm also looking for a fall league in this area.
I even started a website for our team. Eteamz is pretty cool and very easy to use, since I am definitely not even close to what you would call a computer whiz.

Check it out.
