Tuscola County Invite crowns two. Vassar easily repeated as the champs of the Tuscola County Invitational on Saturday. In three games, the Vulcans scored a total of 35 runs; they defeated Millington in the opener 14-0, handed USA a 10-6 defeat and continued to pour it on in finals, winning by a score of 11-5 over Mayville.
There was a lot of good baseball over the whole day, but the hitting from the Vassar squad may have been the most impressive thing.
Not only was their hitting solid, but their pitching was tough as well.
Against Millington, Vassar's Kyle Lemcke walked the leadoff hitter and then responded by retiring the next fifteen hitters, holding on to the no-hitter.
Lemcke pitched the final two+ innings vs USA and the seventh vs Mayville; in all, he threw 10 and 2/3 innings with no runs allowed on Saturday.
The Vulcans looked good in the field, making all the plays they needed to make against Mayville, and the hitting kept firing on all cylinders throughout the game, as the Vulcans scored at least one run in every inning played.
Mayville won the other pool, defeating both Caro and Reese in close games.
USA handled Millington, as the Cardinals finished the day without a win.
On the girls side, it was Reese who ended as the county champ, defeating Vassar by a score of 8-2 in the finals.
The Rockets pulled out a couple of close ones, having to come back from an early deficit against Caro to win.
The Rockets needed a good performance from Abbey Harrington to hold on to a 2-1 win over Mayville before winning it all in the finals.
Vassar may have been out of gas; the Vulcans Katie Harper pitched all three games, leading her team to a 5-2 win over Millington and a 2-1 pitchers dual over Cass City to win their pool.
Cass City is a puzzling situation; they mercied Millington 15-0 and then lost 2-1 to Vassat, which, granted is a really good team, but the Red Hawks couldn't get it going against Harper.
USA was conspicuously absent from the girls side of the tournament...I don't know why, but they were only there as spectators for the boys.
Why, Lions, why? After watching most of the NFL draft on Saturday, I came to the realization that I don't get the Lions, but then again, what else is new.
I guess the pick of Calvin Johnson was a 'can't miss' pick, but do the Lions really need another WR?
And the pick of Drew Stanton....what a lousy pick that was!! Millen and Co. actually made a move to get Stanton, which just boggles the mind.
If they wanted to make a move, why not try to move up and grab Joe Staley, the highly touted OT from CMU who was drafted in the first round?
Or why not draft an OL with the pick that they wasted on Stanton?
Do they really believe that Stanton is the QB of the future? A three-year starter who never won a league title for his team, who never took his team to a bowl game and who never once defeated his school's biggest rival (GO BLUE!!)?
This pick just made it all clear why the Lions have the worst record in NFL over the Millen-era, and it's only going to get worse.
Stanton is not the type of QB who can thrive in the Martz offense; Stanton is a rollout QB, the kind who makes his best moves on the run, who can improvise and run to make up for the lack of a true QB arm.
A QB in the Martz has to have a quick release, which Stanton does not have.
The Lions needed help on the OL, DL, and S and CB positions, none of which were addressed in the draft. And our LB crew always seem to be injured, yet with Al Wilson recently given his release from Denver, the Lions have made no push for the Pro-Bowler.
I guess the day will soon come when I just stop caring; it seems that those in charge gave up a long time ago.
Wings behind again. Speaking of losing faith, once again the Red Wings look slow and old against a lower seeded team in the NHL playoffs.
The Wings had it rough in the first round vs Calgary, and now the Sharks look like world beaters in the first three games against the Wings.
If they lose tomorrow night, they will be down 3-1 and face the difficult task of winning three straight against a tough goalie.
I don't see that happening.
