For the second time this year, the Essexville-Garber Dukes (7-2)travel to Millington (8-1) to take on the Cardinals. Millington won the first game 20-19 back on September 26. After spotting the Dukes to a 13-0 halftime lead, the Cardinal defense showed up big by creating five second half turnovers. The offense scored three touchdowns, and held on for the win. Garber was led by running back Andrew Aho who carried the ball 34 times for 196 yards and a touchdown. "I feel bad for my boys because we were the better football team," said Duke Head Coach Dave Schwartz after the loss. "We were the more physical team tonight." Millington's offense was led by running back Kyle Hemingway with 95 yards on 21 carries and one touchdown. Defensively backup quarterback Josh Williams had two interceptions, including the game clincher with 1:46 left in the game at the Cardinal 10 yard line. With Reese and Ubly going on scoring frenzies and still unbeaten, what does the future hold for these teams? Obviously the playoffs are in plain view for both teams but lets look past that. The Millington Cardinals defeated Fowlerville on Monday night to move into the Regional Final game against the Powers Catholic Chargers . Powers moved to the final game by defeating Ponitac Notre Dame Prep by a score of 75-57. The Chargers compete in the Big Nine Conference in Genesee County. The Big Nine comprises of Davison , Carmen- Ainsworth , Flushing, Powers Catholic, Grand Blanc , and Kearsley . Yes, only six schools in conference called the Big Nine, obviously counting problems like the Big Ten. Tim Herman has coached this team to an overall record of 17-7, along with a 2 nd place finish in the Big Nine. The Chargers have scoring average of 69.2 points per game, while giving up 56.4. Powers has been primarily led all season by the Moreland brothers. Younger brother Shane (#2), a 6'2" junior guard, leads the team in scoring with an average of 19.2. We will be in Imlay City this Monday covering the Class B Regional Semi-Final between Tuscola County's Millington Cardinals and the Fowlerville Gladiators from Livingston County. The Gladiators led by Coach Fred Hackett play in the Capitol Area Activities Conference (CAAC). Fowlerville (18-5 overall) finished in 2nd place in the CAAC Gold Division with a record of 7-3. The purple and gold Gladiators have been led all season by 6'2" senior guard/forward Sean Romsek (#12), with a scoring average of 17.6 points/game. Also averaging double figure in points per game, are 6'4" senior forward/center Joe Lane (#30) with an average of 11.9 and 5'8" senior guard Ryan Ross(#14) with an average of 11.5. Fowlerville advanced to the regionals by winning 3 games in District 46B at their home gymnasium. They defeated Perry 76-55 last Monday in the district quarterfinal. Cardinals Rule. Faced with a 10-point deficit as the game entered the fourth quarter, Millington staged an amazing comeback on Friday night. Led by Dustin Griesing's nine fourth quarter points, the Cardinals erased the deficit against North Branch and won, 52-49, taking the Class B, District 57 championship as well. The District title is the first boys title for the school since 1999. Griesing was 'Mr. Clutch' down the stretch. The senior calmly was 6-for-6 in free throws within the game's last minute of play, giving his team the title over the Broncos. It was obvious that Griesing was not going to allow his team to lose, as he put them on his back and carried them to the title when they needed it most. Millington, down by as much as 12 in the third quarter (34-22), was in desperate need of an offensive spark when the game entered the fourth.
